On November 11, 1918, the guns fell silent. It was the war to end all wars. It was a war fought with the tactics of two sides armed with rifles, where the odds of the solid wall of men charging the other were decent enough to promise victory. It was a war where that technology was hopefully out of date. It was the war of the machine gun, where one man on one machine gun spat out more death than a platoon of riflemen. It was the war of the most powerful artillery ever seen in history-to that point. It was the war that wiped out a generation.
Six weeks
later, a former military chaplain, now employed as the Dean (a religious
office), at King’s College in Cambridge, introduced this service for the first
time. It was to move forward the healing. It has a history all its own, and our adaptation of the service has shifted
some things for our Lord’s Day Worship, but its history is not lost. It
celebrates, once again, the giving of the greatest gift that humanity has ever
received. It was a sign of healing after the most destructive war the world had
ever seen.
It is the service
that we will be celebrating this Sunday, Dec. 18, 2022, at 10am in our Sanctuary.
We are the First Presbyterian Church of Perth Amboy, located on the corner of
Market and High Streets in Perth Amboy, across the street from City Hall on the
Market Square. We are at 45 Market Street in Perth Amboy. We invite you to come
worship with us.
If you are unable to join us in person, we will be
livestreaming the service on our YouTube Channel, “Considering The Faith”,
@consideringthefaith7530 as well as on our Facebook page at “First Presbyterian
Church of Perth Amboy”, Lord willing and tech able. We look forward to having
you join us.
Peace, Rev. Peter
